It tests four mechanical properties: abrasion resistance, cut resistance under the Coup Test, tear resistance, and puncture resistance. Since the 2016 revision, cut resistance under EN ISO 13997 is added on top, with impact protection as an optional extra. The result appears as a fixed sequence of four digits and a letter under the shield pictogram, either on the glove itself or in the datasheet.<\/p>\n<h2>The four digits and the letter in the EN 388 pictogram<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Abrasion resistance (1st digit, scale 0\u20134)<\/strong>: Sandpaper rubs against the material under defined force. The cycles needed to wear through it are counted, with the levels corresponding to 100, 500, 2,000, and 8,000 cycles. The more cycles required, the higher the digit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cut resistance under the Coup Test (2nd digit, scale 0\u20135)<\/strong>: A rotating round blade cuts under fixed pressure, compared against a reference fabric. Details on this method are in the glossary under<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/niroflex.de\/en\/cut-protection-glossary\/#coup-test\">Coup Test<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tear resistance (3rd digit, scale 0\u20134)<\/strong>: The material is nicked and the tear then pulled apart. The force needed to do so is measured.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Puncture resistance (4th digit, scale 0\u20134)<\/strong>: A standardised spike is pushed through the material with increasing force. The more force the glove withstands, the higher the digit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cut resistance under EN ISO 13997 (letter, A\u2013F)<\/strong>: Added in 2016 alongside the Coup Test, using the TDM method, which measures more accurately for highly cut-resistant materials. Explained in detail in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/niroflex.de\/en\/en-iso-13997-explained\/\">EN ISO 13997 Explained<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What does an X mean in the EN 388 code?<\/h2>\n<p>An X usually appears in place of the Coup Test digit when a material is so cut-resistant that the blade blunts prematurely during the test and delivers no reliable result. For such materials, the letter from the TDM Test counts instead of the digit. An X for abrasion, tear, or puncture usually means that test isn&#8217;t meaningfully applicable to the glove&#8217;s construction or wasn&#8217;t stated. Either way, an X is not a failing grade. It simply shows that no numeric value applies at that position.<\/p>\n<h2>The P for impact protection<\/h2>\n<p>Since the 2016 revision, a &#8220;P&#8221; can appear after the code. It shows the glove has additionally been tested for impact protection on the back of the hand, for example against blunt knocks or falling objects. This test is voluntary, so a missing P doesn&#8217;t automatically mean weaker protection. It usually just means the manufacturer hasn&#8217;t listed this additional property for the product.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you read a complete EN 388 code?<\/h2>\n<p>An example: the code &#8220;3X42D&#8221; means abrasion resistance 3, Coup Test not meaningful (X), tear resistance 4, puncture resistance 2, cut resistance level D under the TDM Test. In practice that&#8217;s solid abrasion resistance, good tear resistance, moderate puncture resistance, and for cut protection only the level D counts here, because the Coup Test doesn&#8217;t work for this material.<\/p>\n<h2>What does this have to do with the cut protection level?<\/h2>\n<p>When people talk about &#8220;cut protection level,&#8221; they usually mean only the second digit or the letter from this code, not the whole EN 388 pictogram. The full code with all four digits and the letter is typically found in the detailed test certificate or on the glove itself, even if it isn&#8217;t always spelled out in marketing material.<\/p>\n<h3>Is an X automatically a bad rating?<\/h3>\n<p>No. An X simply means no numeric value was determined at that position, usually because the test isn&#8217;t meaningful for the material or wasn&#8217;t carried out. For the Coup Test digit specifically, it&#8217;s actually a sign of a very cut-resistant material, for which the more precise TDM Test is used instead.<\/p>\n<h3>Does EN 388 also cover protection against stabs?<\/h3>\n<p>Only to a limited extent. The puncture resistance test in EN 388 uses a standardised, fairly blunt spike, not a sharp knife tip.
